Licence Requirements
You can drive on a valid overseas licence for 3 months after arriving in WA. After that, you must obtain a WA driver's licence. Some countries have reciprocal licence agreements (UK, USA, Canada, NZ, most EU countries) — no test required.
Buying Your First Car
You'll need an Australian bank account, proof of address, and your passport/visa. Finance may be harder to obtain without Australian credit history — a larger deposit (30-50%) helps. Some dealers and lenders specialise in helping new residents.
Registration Process
You'll need: proof of identity, proof of WA address, the vehicle's current registration papers, a completed transfer form, and payment of stamp duty and registration fees.
Insurance
Comprehensive insurance is recommended. Provide your overseas driving history — many insurers will recognise it to reduce premiums.
