The Major Players
BYD: World's largest EV manufacturer. The Atto 3 and Sealion 6 offer exceptional value with long warranties.
MG: Now Chinese-owned (SAIC), MG offers the cheapest new cars in Australia. The ZS and HS are massive sellers.
GWM/Haval: The Jolion, H6, and Tank 300 compete directly with established SUVs at lower prices.
Pros
Significantly cheaper than Japanese/Korean competitors, loaded with features, long warranties (7 years for MG/GWM, BYD), and improving quality with each model year.
Cons
Unproven long-term reliability (too new for 10-year data), smaller service networks, uncertain resale value, and some models have disappointing ANCAP ratings.
Our Take
For new purchases, Chinese brands offer compelling value — but consider resale risk. For used purchases, it's still too early — most are still within warranty age. We stock Chinese brands when they meet our quality standards, alongside the proven Japanese, Korean, and European makes our customers trust.
