AWD Benefits
Better traction in wet conditions, improved stability on gravel roads, enhanced confidence for weekend beach/bush driving, and generally better resale value in the Perth market.
AWD Drawbacks
Higher purchase price ($2,000-4,000 more), increased fuel consumption (5-10% more), heavier servicing costs (transfer case, differential fluids), and additional weight reducing performance.
Perth Reality Check
Perth rarely gets extreme weather. Roads are generally well-maintained. A 2WD with good tyres handles Perth's conditions perfectly for 95% of driving. AWD becomes valuable only if you regularly drive on unsealed roads, beach tracks, or slippery surfaces.
Our Recommendation
If you stay on sealed roads and occasionally visit the beach: save your money with 2WD. If you regularly go bush, camp, or drive on unsealed roads around Perth (Mundaring, Lancelin, etc.): AWD is worth the investment. For serious off-roading: you need proper 4WD (low-range), not just AWD.
