Charging Options
Level 1 (Standard Outlet): 10A household plug. Adds ~10km range per hour. Free (uses existing outlet) but very slow. Suitable for PHEVs or overnight charging of short-range EVs.
Level 2 (Wall Box): 32A dedicated circuit. Adds ~40-50km range per hour. Costs $1,500-3,000 installed. The recommended option for most EV owners.
Installation Process
1. Check your switchboard capacity with an electrician. 2. Choose a charger (Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Tesla Wall Connector, Fronius Wattpilot). 3. Licensed electrician installs the charger and dedicated circuit. 4. Total cost: $1,500-3,000 including installation.
Solar Integration
Perth averages 8+ hours of sunshine daily — ideal for solar-powered EV charging. A 6.6kW solar system can generate enough energy to charge 50-70km of driving per day for free. Smart chargers can be programmed to only charge when solar is producing.
Running Costs
Home charging at Perth's average electricity rate (~30c/kWh): approximately $4-5 per 100km. With solar: essentially free. Compared to $12-18 per 100km for petrol, the savings are substantial.
