Vehicle Checks Before Departure
Oil level and condition, coolant level, brake fluid, tyre pressure (including spare), tyre tread depth, all lights working, wiper blades, and battery health. If any service is due within 2,000km, do it before you leave.
Essential Supplies
20+ litres of drinking water per person, first aid kit, spare tyre (full-size if possible), jack and wheel brace, jumper cables, tow rope, torch with spare batteries, UHF radio (for remote areas), insect repellent, and sunscreen.
Route Planning
Map your fuel stops carefully. In regional WA, fuel stations can be 200-400km apart. Always fill up at every opportunity — never rely on the next town. Carry a physical map as backup; mobile coverage is patchy beyond major highways.
Driving in Regional WA
Watch for wildlife, especially at dawn and dusk. Kangaroos, emus, and cattle cause serious accidents. Use high beams at night and reduce speed on unfamiliar roads. Pull over and rest every 2 hours.
Emergency Protocol
If you break down in remote WA: stay with your vehicle, conserve water, use mirrors or bright clothing to signal for help, and activate your personal locator beacon (PLB) if you have one. Never walk away from your vehicle in extreme heat.
