What Is ANCAP?
The Australasian New Car Assessment Program tests vehicles for crashworthiness and safety systems. Ratings range from 0-5 stars, with 5 being the safest.
How Tests Have Changed
A 5-star rating from 2015 is NOT equivalent to a 5-star rating from 2022. Tests become stricter over time, adding new criteria (AEB pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, intersection safety). Always check when the rating was awarded.
Minimum Rating to Consider
For family vehicles, we recommend nothing below 5 stars (2018+ rating). For singles/couples on a budget, 4 stars (2018+ rating) is acceptable. Avoid vehicles with no rating or pre-2015 ratings.
Where to Check
