Australian Consumer Law Guarantees
Regardless of any warranty, Australian Consumer Law guarantees that goods must be of acceptable quality, fit for purpose, and match their description. This applies to both new and used vehicles bought from a dealer.
Manufacturer Warranty
Typically 5-7 years on new vehicles (Toyota: 5 years, Hyundai/Kia: 5-7 years, Mazda: 5 years). Covers defects in materials and workmanship. Often transfers to new owners if within the warranty period.
Statutory Warranty (WA)
In WA, used vehicles bought from a dealer and priced over $6,000 come with a statutory warranty. Vehicles under 10 years old with under 150,000km are covered for 3 months or 5,000km.
Extended Warranty
Optional coverage beyond the statutory period. Costs $800-2,500 for 1-3 years. Covers mechanical and electrical failures (not wear-and-tear items). Can include roadside assistance.
Making a Warranty Claim
Contact the warrantor immediately when an issue arises. Keep all documentation. You cannot be required to use a specific repairer for warranty work under Australian Consumer Law.
