Immediate Steps
1. Stop and check for injuries. Call 000 if anyone is hurt. 2. Move vehicles off the road if safe to do so. 3. Turn on hazard lights. 4. Call police if the accident involves injury, a driver under the influence, a driver failing to stop, or damage over $3,000.
Exchange Information
Get the other driver's: name, address, phone number, licence number, vehicle registration, and insurance details. Note the time, location, and weather conditions.
Document Everything
Take photos of all vehicles, damage, licence plates, the intersection/scene, and any skid marks. If you have a dash cam, save the footage immediately (don't let it loop-record over the evidence).
Report to Your Insurer
Notify your insurance company within 24-48 hours, regardless of fault. Provide all collected information and photos. Do not admit fault at the scene — let the insurers determine liability.
WA-Specific Requirements
In WA, you must report any accident involving injury to police within 24 hours. If the other driver fails to stop, note as many details as possible and report to police immediately.
Towing & Repairs
If your car is undriveable, your insurer can arrange towing. Do not authorise repairs without insurer approval. You're entitled to choose your own repairer, but using an insurer-recommended shop may speed up the process.
