How Turbos Work
A turbocharger forces more air into the engine, creating more power from a smaller displacement. A 1.5L turbo can produce power equivalent to a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine while using less fuel under light load.
Reliability Concerns
Modern turbos are far more reliable than their predecessors. Toyota, Hyundai, and Mazda turbo engines regularly exceed 200,000km without issues. However, they do require: correct oil grade, regular oil changes (critical), and a brief cool-down period after hard driving.
When to Choose Turbo
If you need good performance from a fuel-efficient engine, tow regularly (turbo torque is excellent for towing), or want the best balance of performance and economy.
When to Choose Naturally Aspirated
If you want the simplest, lowest-maintenance engine, plan to keep the car for 10+ years, or prefer a more predictable power delivery without turbo lag.
